Relief from overwhelm, hopelessness and fear: Step 1

Depression, Fear - Anxiety - Worry - Panic, Procrastination Comments Off on Relief from overwhelm, hopelessness and fear: Step 1

Blueprint for hope and optimism

Today we’ll be looking at 2 questions about feeling hopeless, fearful and overwhelmed.  After a step-by-step plan for my clients, I decided to put some of my answers into the next few posts.  People don’t need to suffer with churning, harmful thoughts, I hope you enjoy these posts and if you have question just contact me on the tab on the side of this page.

Question 1:  This week I’m feeling anxiety again.  After our sessions I usually  leave feeling like a new person. Like there is a ray of light.  But this week I’m feeling like I will never get better.  It feels like there isn’t any hope for true relief.  I feel like I’m backsliding into anxiety and fear.    I followed up on 2 of my action steps and started to be fearful about moving ahead with my plans.  What is wrong with me?

Question 2: I’m feeling disconnected, whenever I start to feel good, I start monitoring my body for signs of anxiety.  I can be really happy and at ease, then I start to check to see if I am really feeling that way, within moments the good feelings disappear.  That’s when I get disconnected.  Even though I find I’m calmer physically my thoughts still get overwhelming.

Is there an effective strategy for breaking the cycle of monitoring my thoughts, that you can give me until we meet again?

The following answers will be a combination answer to both Questions: Today I’ll start with step 1, and in the upcoming days the next steps will be given.

Answer:  Dear Rennith (fictional name).
I am happy to see that you did give yourself a bit of credit for the relief you did feel recently.  That is a glimpse of the positive changes you are capable of.    It is my desire teach you the tools you need so that you once again will feel optimistic and hopeful.

Steps for hope and optimism:

Step 1:  Start jotting things down that would have to happen to make you feel hopeful.   Not just the major changes, but also the smallest “things” that would “have to”  change for you to feel even the tiniest bit of hope.  (This way you’ll start to notice the smallest changes in the positive direction and be able to remind yourself that there is movement in the right direction.

We’ve talked about the times recently, where you felt a “reprieve” from overwhelm and anxiety.  Think back to those times you felt the changes starting to happen, where you felt different and better.

Fear, negative thinking and checking your feelings are all old patterns. It’s interesting that the upset resurfaced when you were feeling happy. I imagine that the  “little voice “in the back of your mind started giving you negative messages, such as telling you that  nothing was changing.

When that pattern happens the old panic cycle gets going as you think about all the reasons that you are afraid, stuck or that nothing will change.

Relief from Depression & Fear – Tools for easy trance using the hypnotic set-up.

Depression Comments Off on Relief from Depression & Fear – Tools for easy trance using the hypnotic set-up.

In the last post I started discussing the “set up” for successful hypnosis.  Today I’ll continue with some of the basic steps you might have in your first hypno-therapy session including the hypnotic “set up” for easy trance work.

I’ve received a few e-mails asking me to add some specific exercises for opening up the unconscious.  I will give a number of questions you can use to start the process getting to the deeper desires and goals that are stored in the unconscious mind.

Because each person, and the issues they come to the Anxiety Control Center with are different, the steps we take will also be unique for each individual.   Below is a sample of some of the steps and techniques.

Step 1.  We start each session by talking together.  We discuss what blocks are present, and look at patterns and issues.  We might discuss family history, traumas, worries and fears.  We also talk about coping skills and positive things that have happened.

During the set up it might seem like we are just talking, yet our clients find that this is a very important part of the hypnotic “set up.”   There are numerous  NLP and hypnotic techniques that the hypno-therapist might use during the first session.   The specific “wording” that is used helps to open up the mind.  Even during the first session   shifts might be felt.    And as a benefit,  you’ll find that as the mind opens up with each session, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can make changes in old patterns.

Step 2:   Getting to the the underlying goals.  What you would like to accomplish if it were possible (and of course it is possible.)
Following are some questions you can use:
Have a piece of paper ready and write down the answers to the following questions:  We start with the first two questions and then go into the “magic wand” technique to open the mind up for the deeper possibilities.

  1. What would make a major difference in your life?
  2. What would have to change to make that difference? (emotions, beliefs, new way of reacting etc.)
  3. Use this next technique to get into your most creative state of mind.”MAGIC WAND TECHNIQUE”
  4. Imagine that you have a “magic wand.”  This magic wand is so powerful that waving it over yourself will change even the most  ingrained patterns and blocks.
  5.  As you are imagining this wand being waved over yourself ask yourself:
  6. What changes would you make if you had this magic wand?
  7. Just let your mind flow as you write down whatever comes to mind.
  8. Be creative, just allow yourself to write down even this most “out there” desires.

Step 3.  When talking about your goals, we start with the “tip of the iceberg” which are issues that people come to the Anxiety Control Center with.    This topic will be continued in the next post.

Relief from Fear and Depression – Todd’s Story – Part 2

Depression, Sleep Help 2 Comments »

I’d like to thank all of you who have sent me emails asking for more details about the techniques Todd used to get past the fear, depression and anxiety.  (previous post May 2012).

And to those e-mailed questions about your own unique issues,  I know it takes a lot of courage to put these fears into words, and I will do my best, as I continue to share about Todd, to focus on some of the techniques we used that you too might find helpful.

Continued from Post 1 Todd:
In a light state of trance Todd was able to quickly “track back in time” to the root where a negative “belief” about himself started.  In hypnotic terms this is called regression.  If you have read the book Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss MD, you have an idea of what regression can bring up.  That book gave us so much information about the unconscious mind.  It also gave the impression that it will take years of regression to get to the roots of present day issues.  Hypno-therapists  studying today have come a long way  from the long and arduous process of hypnotic regression.  Now there are quicker ways to “track back” to a emotional experiences that cause problems in the present.      All of us owe a dept to Dr. Brian Weiss, he had the courage that opened the way to recognizing hypnosis and regression as a viable therapeutic modality.  Oops, as I write sometimes little facts com up that seems important, so after this little digression let’s get back to Todd.

For Todd depression was felt as as a heavy feeling in his “gut”/ stomach. It is possible to get quickly to the root of an issue (this is a more recent hypnotic technique, that Dr Weiss had available) by using the physical sensation.  For Todd he used the feeling in his gut to track back to earlier times when the sensation/feeling was felt.

To understand this emotional linking, think of  a string of pearls.  Each pearl represents an event with the same emotional “vibration”.   So depression “pearls” are one one string going all the way back in our life line.   Anger would be another “string of pearls.”  Shame, guild, fear etc all have their own “string of pearls”.   For Todd the gut feeling he had in the present was one “pearl” on his depression “string”.  This was the link we used so he could quickly track back to the very root of where his depression started.  Using the physical feeling and a light state of trance . . .  to be continued in Post 3 Todd gets relief

Please continue to let me know if you would like to know more about Todd and how he was able to transform his life.  To link to Audrey’s e-mailing click here.  Again feel free to share issues you are facing, so I can discuss some of the techniques and how they might help you.

Relief from Fear and Depression – Todd’s Story – Part 1

Depression, Grief, Past Life, Worry Comments Off on Relief from Fear and Depression – Todd’s Story – Part 1

Today I will be talking about life changing hypnotic techniques.  This is the story of Todd and how changing a long held negative belief about himself has freed him from depression and fear.  I’ll refer to my client as Todd (the name has been changed for confidentiality).  Todd is a 45 year old man. He is a married with two children and people who know him would never guess at the anxiety and depression that he has been suffering all  his life.

He has accomplished so much in his life, yet when he came to see me he told me he thought he needed to be hospitalized.  He said it couldn’t take it anymore.  As we talked he told me that had used alcohol to try to get some peace, but it came with a price, and never really truly brought him the peace he sought.

Although he has been sober for 5 years he was still feeling guilty about the anger and rage that he directed at all around him when he had been drinking.   He was afraid his had ruined his relationships and that there was no hope for him.

Since Todd was in crisis when he came to therapy,  our first session lasted for 3 hours.  He already was very clear about how he wanted his life to be.  We started using a simple breathing exercise to get into a light hypnotic trance state.  This light trance enabled Todd to go deeper into his unconscious to uncover additional goals he was hoping we could work on.

We started working with his feeling of depression.  Using the tight feeling in his chest Todd was able to follow it back to a memory.  It turned out that this was the first memory at the root of his depression and anger.  In the “root” memory he was only 3 years old.  This was the first time he could remember his mother screaming at him, that he would “never amount to anything.”  Unfortunately there were many more memories of hearing these words screamed at him.   At three he didn’t have the life experience to understand that this couldn’t be a true statement.  Since he was only 3 years old.   More about Todd in the next post tomorrow.

If you would like to know more about Todd and how he was able to transform his life email me and let me know. Click here to email Audrey. Feel free to share issues that you are dealing so I can discuss some of the techniques and how they might help you.

Depression Relief step 4

Depression Comments Off on Depression Relief step 4

Getting relief from depression

Review:
A.Whenever you feel sad, grief stricken, overwhelmed, fearful or anxious.
Start by taking some type of action.

You want to change the “state of mind.”  This can be done in many different ways.

It is difficult to think of something to do to change your state of mind in the middle of a panic attack, or when you are in the grip of depression.  One of my clients asked for techniques she could refer to anytime she was feeling out of control with emotion.

The following is what we came up with.  It is a list of possible things she can choose from.  Having a list helps, so that in the moment of emotion she doesn’t have to think, she can just choose to take action on any one thing from her list.

You might find something on her list helpful,  start to add some of you own unique solutions.  This client already know many of the exercises from the Anxiety Control Center’s, Transformation System, so they are not described in detail here.   They are easy to learn and use.

The following is her list of action steps when emotions are raging:
1.  Walk outside, even if it is cold out.
2.  Read a book or magazine
3. Sing or play guitar
4. Use one of the NLP techniques to “shrink the image down to size”
5. Imagine being in a warm tub.
6. Hug her dog.
7. Use the “rubber-band snap” technique.
8. Use tapping exercise.
9. Go to the video guide  to help to change the “state of mind,
10. Using the “color” breathing exercise
11.  Use the “fact & stories” exercise.
12. Create 2 positives for every negative. (2 for 1 exercise)
13. Listen to the “Healing Walk” exercise I gave her.
14. Pay attention and focus inward, using the curiosity technique.
This last technique will help you to collect information that you might not be aware of on a conscious level.  Being curious is a vital step to using your mind in a different way.

Changing from self blame to self acceptance:
In getting relief from depression and other emotions that get in the way of living a full life, it is important to learn how to be kinder to yourself, as you are, even before the emotions totally lift.  Recovering from depression is a process, keep taking one small step and it will motivate you to the next step, until one day you will surprise yourself at what you have accomplished.

If you have you been suffering from depression, panic, anxiety or feeling hopeless, change is possible !  I have watched so many people use my Transformation System to get out from under the dark spell of depression.

Depression Relief step 3

Depression Comments Off on Depression Relief step 3

Today we will continue looking at the next steps in getting relief from depression.

Review:
A.Whenever you feel overwhelmed, fearful or anxious.
1. Take action by going to  the video guide .
It will guide you in the breathing for calm exercise.
2. Using the breathing exercise will help to change your “state of mind,
to one where you can pay attention and focus inward.
3. The next step to take to find out what is underneath the emotion is to be curious.
4. Say to yourself, “I’m curious about what the anxiety, stress or fear is about”.
This will help you to collect information that you might not be aware of on a conscious level.
5.  Being curious is a vital step to using your mind in a different way.

B. Changing from self blame to self acceptance.

1. In getting relief from depression and other emotions that get in the way of living a full
life, it is important to learn how to be kinder to yourself, as you are, even before the
emotions totally lift.
2. Recovering from depression is a process, keep taking one small step and it will
motivate you to the next step, until one day you will surprise yourself at what you
have accomplished.

3. I believe that it is possible to change even the most difficult emotional reactions
when you find out what is going on underneath.   The first exercise had a
number of purposes.  If you’ve been practicing using it you have already noticed
some changes in your state of mind.  If you haven’t done that exercise yet, please
go back after reading this and follow along with the video.

4. If you have you been suffering from depression and feeling hopeless
there is hope for change.  I have watched so many people use my
Transformation System to get out from under the dark spell of depression.

5. The next step (step 2) in this step-by-step plan is to be curious and begin
to observe what is going on underneath your feelings.   This is different from
judging the feelings.  Many people get angry with themselves for even having
anxiety, worry, and depression or for procrastination.

6. So instead, we will practice this next exercise.  When you get an emotion that
doesn’t feel good, stop for just a moment and ask yourself:
1. “what is going on underneath?”
2. “What is this feeling about”
3.  “what needs of mine aren’t being satisfied”
4. “what am I afraid of”.
5.  Remember instead of blaming yourself for the uncomfortable feelings of
anxiety, depression, worry or for procrastinating, you instead become
curious about the feelings.
6. As  you begin to get the answers, we then can start on the next step of
breaking the problem down into its smallest parts.

We’ll talk more about this in the next post.

Depression Relief – step 2

Depression: Step 2 in the Step-by-step plan for getting back the spark of joy

In the last post we discussed the 1st step for lifting yourself out of the feelings of
depression, anxiety, fear and worry.   In the next few posts we will continue looking
at the next steps.

Whenever we feel overwhelmed with any emotion or task, remember to practice
the first exercise.  Do this every day using the video guide I gave you.

Once you have changed your “state of mind” with the 1st exercise, the next step is to
begin to look underneath the emotion.  To collect information that you might not be
aware of.

And the way to do this is to use your mind in a different way.  Instead of blaming
yourself for the uncomfortable feelings of anxiety, depression, worry or  procrastinating
you instead change your state by becoming curious about your feelings.

Once you are in a curious “state of mind” you will find it helpful to ask yourself the
questions I will give you. . .

Next post in a few days.

I welcome your questions.  Get them answered by joining me for the “live” online
coaching workshop on October 5, 2011.

It’s only $10.  To sign up click here.

Depression: Step-by-step plan for getting back the spark of joy

Depression Comments Off on Depression: Step-by-step plan for getting back the spark of joy

Have you been suffering from depression and feeling hopeless?  Have you tried
but don’t know how to change these feelings?

Are you wishing for something, some “guiding light,” some technique, anything
that’s will help you to get out from under the dark spell of depression?  I want you
to know that here is hope !  I have a step-by-step plan of actions for you to take.
They are it easy to follow, because I know that when you are depressed it’s difficult
to concentrate or to have energy to even read a short article.

I realize that when you are depressed and your energy is depleted it might be hard
to even get out of bed, not to mention reading an article on how to get relief.  So to
make this even easier, I give you a link to a video that will guide you through the
first action step.

So, please, read on and take action, by going to watch the video today.  Take the
first step in changing your life today.     The link is at the bottom of this article.

My name is Audrey Sussman and for over the past 25 years I have helped my
clients to find a way to move themselves from feeling depressed and hopeless,
to feeling optimism and energy.

The first step is simple. It is something so easy to do that you can even do it from
the bed or the chair you are sitting in. So I’ll keep this to just the first step.

In the days and weeks to come, I’ll give you the next steps.  If you follow the
step-by-step plan, you might even surprise yourself as you begin to look forward
to doing the next small step.  Keeping it simple, taking tiny steps moves you in
the direction of hope, until one day you notice you are thinking and feeling
differently.

So, for you who are suffering with depression, worry, or loss of hope, lets start
with the first easy step, and it’s something that only requires your doing something
you are doing anyway.  This is it: Changing your breathing pattern.   This is a
physical or behavioral technique to change your state of mind.  There are other
techniques to deal with negative thoughts and emotions, but we need to start with
the 1st step first.

Go to actionendsprocrastination.com and watch the video.  I’ll guide your through
and give you tips for making it even more successful.  Practice it every day for the
next two weeks, and stay curious.

If you would rather have the written directions, put in your name and email
in the box on the right of this post to download the directions.

That’s it for today.  Start with the first behavioral change, and you’ll be preparing
yourself for the next step, I’ll be giving you.   See you soon,

Audrey
