A few weeks ago I had received a question from one of my readers, about past life and panic. I sent her a quick reply, with a note that I would write more after I was done posting about procrastination.
Recently, when I was snowed in, I was flipping through the channels and came across of a new TV show called “Past Lives.” This show brings up an interesting concept of whether past lives exist, and if they can affect what happens in our present life. Since this TV show about past lives is now running, I have gotten other questions, about the effects of old memories.
So in the next few posts I will be discussing ideas about flash backs, past life memories, childhood memories, decisions and emotions and the effects on our reactions.
In this TV show call “Past Life” the premise is that, not only do past lives exist, but that traumatic past life experiences can be remembered.
The last episode of the TV show there is a person you accepts the young boy’s (actor) “flash backs” as real. Her job is to help him to unravel these memories and the fear that came from them. This is similar to what I do as a hypnotherapist, getting to the root and releasing old “junk” that lies there. Of course in the TV show, she had a purpose not only help the boy but to solve a crime using his “memory of a past life.” Very interesting show.
Here is the Question sent in by one of my readers: Do you think there is anything to the theory that past lives affect and may cause anxiety attacks?
Audrey’s Answer:
Before I answer with my beliefs, we’ll first look a bit deeper at the question. Let’s think about what the questioner really is asking. I’d like to find out what is underneath the question about past lives in relation to anxiety. In my next post I will continue to discuss this past live issues and present life fears.

The following post is from a note that came from one of my amazing clients. She is the mother of a beautiful 3 year old and had used what she has learned in therapy to help her own child. When she told me about how she dealt with her daughter’s fear I asked her to send in her story so others could benefit from it too.
I believe that what she had to say is so powerful that I’m posting it today. Parents may find her story useful as they help their own children deal with fear of the dark. It can also be individualized to help with other specific fears. Thank you “J” for sending this in.
The following is the note from “J”:
“I used to believe my panic was brought on by the changes in weather. Night time also used to bring with it terrible anxiety. Whenever it was a rainy or cloudy day, my panic was at its best (meaning worst). During thunderstorms, I my anxiety was off the charts. Actually in any weather, other than sunny, I felt “unsafe”.
After working with Audrey, so much of my fear has lifted. I now can say that I truly know I am OK no matter the weather. In actuality the weather had nothing to do with my panic, even though at the time it seemed to control me.
Here is what happened that stimulated me to create a story that would help my daughter deal with her fear of the dark. One evening while driving, my 3yr old daughter said, “Mom, I don’t like the night. It’s scary.” When I heard those words, I began to feel sad that my sweet little daughter was dealing with fear and anxiety. And I could feel a rumbling of the old fear I used to have,. But this time, instead of continuing with all types of fearful thoughts, (like I would have done before changing the way I deal with fear,) I decided to turn it into a positive story where both my daughter and I both felt safe. This story just seemed to bubble up out of my mind and this is what I said to my daughter.
“Honey, night time doesn’t need to be scary, because it is just as beautiful as the day time. At night, we get to see the moon and talk with the stars . . . During the day . . . the Sun likes to come out to play. . .
Sometimes . . . the clouds say to the sun . . . “Ms. Sun, you’ve had your fun . . . now it is our turn to come out and stay. . . The rain is wonderful and it likes to wash away dirt and clean the air. . . Thunder and lightening, give us a drum and light show in the sky. . . No matter what the weather or time of day, you can create a place you like to be. . . And if you are scared, you can talk to g-d. G-d . . . who will always be there to listen. . . and if you ask g-d to send a calming light you can feel safe. . . all you need to do is imagine this light all around you . . . and as it is all around you all you need to do is breath it in and notice how different that feels, knowing all is well.”
My daughter LOVED this story and it helped ME as I told it to her as well!”
Again, thanks for this great note. I welcome everyone’s thoughts and I am happy
to post helpful stories and comments like the one above.

Continued from part 3.
Hello again I’m Audrey Sussman and this is Part 4, the last in this series about stopping negative thinking. Today I’ll give a quick template of how to use the Rubber Band Snap so you can use it in a positive (not body damaging) way.
Please send me your questions and thoughts about negative thinking, panic, phobia’s or any of issue you are dealing with. I will either answer you personally or will create a post if many people are asking the same question.
And once again if someone in authority, even someone that seems wise and charismatic tells you to do something, if it sounds wrong, please trust you gut, your inner guidance. If something seems “not quite right” at least sleep on the information as you pay attention to the wisdom of your own mind.
In my many years of helping people to stop procrastinating, to get over phobias, and to stop panic and negative thinking, I have found that the set up for these problems starts in early childhood. It is in childhood that most of our negative messages and beliefs are learned. Even if you were to use the painful exercise to stop negative thoughts, creating pain won’t change the limiting belief that is at the root. Pain will probably will cause a person to repress the thoughts, and that can create other problems.
There is a way to use your own mind to change limiting beliefs at the root. It involves using the Transformation System, which provides a much kinder and quicker way to stop negative thoughts. By using the system you can get to the root of the problem and then reprogram reactions that get in the way of living our lives to the fullest. Once that happens you probably won’t need to use this Rubber band snap exercise.
That being said the Rubber Band Snap can be useful. It can “snap” you out of a negative rut. And it can be used without creating bodily harm.
Although there are many other techniques, this is a good one to start with if you remember the purpose. It is to just get to to stop and pay attention. There once you have stopped the pattern you can add positive statements, or look at the problem from a new perspective.
Quick Overview of the Rubber Band Snap Technique
1. You do put the rubberband on your wrist
2. You just snap it slightly to “snap” you back to the present. It should not leave a red mark.
3. Then, you loudly say the word STOP.
4. Take a deep breath. If you have downloaded my “HAAA breath”, that one works great here.
5. Replace the negative thought with an alternative positive one. (I have written about how to create positive “mantra’s” under a different post)
There is some skill required to create alternative positive thoughts that will serve to reprogram the mind.
I will be happy to send full directions for this technique to all that contact me at anxietycontrol@comcast.net. Just tell me what your negative thought is and how you’d tried to change it. I’ll be happy to have a conversation with you during one of my teleseminars to create powerful alternative thoughts. And will also go over the details of the rubber-band snap technique.
Before spending a lot of time writing about this exercise I’m asking you to contact me, so I’ll know if these posts are helpful to you and to be honest I am want to see if there is interest in this type of exercise.

This is the 3rd of the 4 posts on using hypnosis for the relief of emotional symptoms such as anxiety & fear. In few weeks I’ll be writing more about how it can be used to get relief from physical symptoms such as migraines & Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
And once again I’d like to thank all of you who have been reading my posts and have signed in and received your first 2 exercises. I have gotten a number of comments on how well they work. Please let me know how they are working for you. For people who haven’t yet tried the exercises please do it now. We will have each another exercise available shortly, so keep checking back, and reading our posts at the anxietycontrolcenter.com .
It is great for me to know that so many are following my posts. Sometimes on the “net” we don’t know if something is helpful or not until we get your feed back. Please keep sending your questions I’ll continue to post the answers in the following weeks.
Continued from post 2. . . What makes hypnosis such a powerful tool is that by going directly to the subconscious mind, you can get to the underlying root of the problem, and work on changing unconscious beliefs that aren’t working. People who have been in therapy for years without feeling truly free of old “demons” find that they can get major changes in just a few sessions of hypnosis. The type of hypnosis that works best for deeply rooted blocks, I believe. is Ericksonian not classical. hypnosis. If have written other post about the differences. If you have questions on this send them and I’ll go over the differences again.
Classical Hypnosis does have a place in hypno-therapy and combining both Ericksonian and Classical hypnosis with cognitive and behavioral techniques you have a treatment plan that can help you to gain control over your panic. Release anxiety and fear that blocks you from living your life to the fullest. And this combination approach can be used to uncover the reason behind your extra weight or compulsive eating, allowing you to lose weight and keep it off.
It can be used to relieve migraine headaches, fight allergies and combat certain diseases. I have used this approach with people who have a fear of flying, and I continue to get post cards from all over the world. I keep these postcards hanging in my office to give hope to others who think they are stuck with their fears.
I have even used the combination (called the Transformation System) to help my clients release he underlying causes behind procrastination. And of course it has also be used to uplift people who were suffering with depression and grief.
The most important thing about hypnosis is that it doesn’t just treat symptoms, it treats underlying causes. I believe that unless you get rid of the root of the problem, it will manifest again and again, in different forms throughout your life. Hypnosis is the quickest, but not the only way I have found to discover and deal with the roots of the problem. I will continue with the last post in this series in a few days.

My dad just gave me a note that he had been carrying around with him for the past 2 years. I had sent him the note when he was grieving the loss of his wife of 32 years. I am reprinting it her in hopes that it can help others who are grieving, as it helped my dad. I have removed the very personal parts and just left the information I sent him about how to change feelings by creating pictures and thoughts that create pleasant scenes rather than ones of pain and sadness.
USING THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION TO GAIN CONTROL OVER EMOTIONS
Dad read this, I hope it might help in some way, with you pain and loneliness you are feeling. Dad, in this very sad time I realize how hard it is to believe you will ever feel happy again. And grief is normal and expected when you lose someone you love. But, as the months have passed I listen to you, and as you describe the pictures you are remembering they are about feeling hopeless because of the pain and suffering you keep seeing your wonderful wife going through. I see how these “pictures” affects you as you relive those traumatic memories. Yet, I also hear you talking about many wonderful times you had together before her illness, but almost as soon as you have those thoughts the pictures of pain and sadness, overtake you again. I am sending you some thoughts that come from the book I wrote called, Power of Thought. I know what a positive person you have been your whole life. Always finding the “silver lining” no matter how hard the situation, and I hope as you read the words they will remind you of how to do this again. Perhaps you will use you wonderful creativity to add to my thoughts on this and use your thoughts and memories in a way that creates sweet joy, instead of horror and pain.
Dad here is the excerpt, I’m not editing it too much. First I want to say that it’s important to know that emotions are brought on by the thoughts and pictures we create. A thought is an image that you project. It has force and energy and carries vibrations that move throughout the mind and body. A vibration, as I am using the word is an energy wave or feeling that comes from the mind of the thinker. Vibrations that come from thoughts have an impact on the mind and body. Thoughts and the vibrations attached to them, function like a magnet that attracts similar thoughts. So when you have painful thoughts they attract more memories of pain and sadness. And, you can change your thoughts to ones that create peaceful feelings, and they will attract other memories and feelings of peace and balance.
Even if the images that are created are not on the conscious level, they still vibrate within your system. The more emotion a thought holds, the more impact the “thought, picture or vibration” will have.
No matter what is going on in life, people can learn to be in command of the thoughts they create. Even when there are stressors and events outside of your control, your thoughts can be developed in a way that has a positive impact, even changing how you interpret events. Dad, I know that you have used this technique many times in the past, like the time you went to get the wig for your wife, after chemo, and you were so touched and happy about how caring the person who helped you was, you came back from that appointment feeling uplifted, even though the situation was still a difficult one. So you already understand that, no matter what events may have transpired your mind can create thoughts that enhance your well-being. Your own mind, and the thoughts you create, can be the most powerful resource for you when you use it in this enhancing way. So continue to guide your thoughts with positive energy, putting a positive spin on even a “negative” event.
I haven’t sent you the previous chapters which have an introduction on how old events influence a person’s present outlook, because I know how you have used your mind in a positive way through out my growing up years. So, I’m not sending you the discussion on creating the deep change, by clearing out old limiting beliefs and repressed emotions.
I am reminding you that without even doing deep change work, to release those old sad memories and trauma of the past few years, you can make changes using your thoughts to re-program the way your mind works, creating thoughts and pictures that work better that those of pain and loss. This is powerful way to reduce sadness, loneliness and stress. So remember pictures and thoughts that lead to reactions can be changed on a conscious level (as you know we did some unconscious work to get rid of your headaches, and we can do some more NLP work if you want to change the mental images that are troubling you, but for now start being curious about new images you create. For every negative one, create two that work better. I know it is a “push” to do this when you are sad, yet it really can make a powerful difference in your emotional state. I’ll talk to you more about this later. Just wanted to have it in writing so you can refer to these notes when you want.
Remmeber your body is a complex living system, every part affects every other part, including your emotions and you healing. Your thoughts create physical reactions, such as the clenching in your stomach after a particularly traumatic memory. Even a quick thought can generate a physical reaction in the body. For example, just thinking about a fun vacation you had, remember the boat trip in the blue lagoon in Italy, I can see you smiling as you talk about it. That memory created a reaction or vibration in your body, as if it were happening in the present. What you think has an impact on the “vibrations” that are sent throughout your body. So, the way a you think can lead to positive vibrations, which lead to feelings of happiness, joy and contentment. So I leave you with this to think about, I know you have already created a path of positive memories, so this is just a gentle reminder in how to use your mind in this time a recovery. With all my love. Audrey
