The following is an article written by Audrey Sussman PhD, LCSW, NBCCH, CSL. If you have questions after reading it, please send them to Audrey. Clicking on her name will take you directly to her email.
Recently, when I was snowed in I was flipping through the channels and came across of a new TV show called “Past Life.” This show brings up an interesting concept of whether past lives exist.
In this TV show they accept the premise that not only do past lives exist, but that a traumatic past life experience can be remembered.
The last episode of the TV show was about a young boy who kept getting “flash backs” to a person screaming at “him.” These memories and the fear that went with them made him feel out of control. As I watched the show they did a great job showing how a person in the middle of a panic attack feels. His anxiety attacks were getting in the way of his present life.
The boy was re-living a trauma from a “past life.” And when it happened he had difficulty distinguishing between what was “real” and what was a “flash back.”
Whether or not you believe in past lives, what I have learned as a hypno-therapist is that old memories (ones from our childhood) can and do influence our reactions. In real life (not TV shows) a person may not be aware of these old memories. They might just know that they are feeling anxiety, and not know where it is coming from. That is where hypnotic techniques can be extremely helpful. By going to the part of the mind that stores old memories and releasing old negative “junk” at the root so a person is freed up to move on with life.
I have done regressions with people where they do go to a past life. And I will discuss some of my findings in another article. When old memories and “flash backs” create havoc in a person’s present life, they need to be uncovered and released. Once you are conscious of what is triggering panic and anxiety it becomes possible to change it.
In my practice I use memories a person uncovers, to help to solve present life issues. We don’t have to decide whether the memories are exactly “true”, we act as if they are in order to heal them. In this TV show they have a person, who believes in the boy’s experience. Believing in someone is healing in itself. She doesn’t diagnose him; she uses his flashbacks as information to solve a crime. This is the same concept a hypno-therapist uses, not to judge whether it is true or not, just accept it, as if it is true and use it for a positive healing purpose.
Of course, this “Past Life” TV show has everything is all unraveled in a half-hour. The crime is solved and the boy goes on with his life, relieved of his past life trauma. Even using hypnotic techniques it will take more than 30 minutes, yet I have found that using Hypnosis helps a person to free themselves of trauma, and old limiting beliefs. That is why I was so delighted to see a show that is dealing with the issues of past influencing the present.
Many people have questions and doubt about past life issues. You might wonder if it is even possible to have had a past life. Or if you believe in past life whether a past life can affect present life issues.
There are many ways to release old fear that gets in the way. If you suffer from anxiety, stress, anger or fear. If you procrastinate or use food to gain calm. Or if you would like to put a stop to the negative message that play in your mind, You can learn to use self-hypnosis to get to the root of these issues.

Today we continue to discuss the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind. By understanding which part of the mind holds the unwanted “program” it makes it possible to change the programing. When there are things we don’t like in ourselves the unconscious part of the mind is usually where the root lies.
Sometimes it is easier to understand the difference between the conscious and unconscious by comparing the two parts to the different parts of the computer. The conscious mind can be compared to the screen on a computer, while the unconscious mind would be more similar to the hard drive, including all the programs running there.
As most of us know the hard drive has so much more information than what shows up on the computer screen. When there is a glitch in the computer programming, no matter how many times we try to fix it on the computer screen, the glitch will continue until we fix the faulty program. To fix “faulty” programming in a human we go to the part of the mind where the programming is located, the unconscious. By releasing or reprogramming old limiting beliefs, habits and repressed emotional issues at the root, true and lasting change can take place.
Because the unconscious is like the hard drive, with so much information, and of course the programs “set in” during childhood. This is the part we go to in order to make lasting change. To gain entrance to the unconscious we use hypnosis and trance. The trance state makes it possible to release old emotions and reprogram new habits, beliefs and move past what causes us to get stuck in life.
So, if you find yourself falling back into old patterns, cut yourself some slack. It’s not because you haven’t tried to change, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t motivated it might be that you’re just using the wrong part of the mind.
So start by pulling out the the self blame and the resulting frustration it causes. Know that change is possible when you learn to use the “right” part of the mind. Falling back into old habits is typically because the old program is still running, no matter your good intentions. This can be changed, once you understand which part of the mind to use. I have found this to be the case no matter how difficult the issue seems. For more information on this and other “feeling stuck” issues look for our upcoming posts in the New Year.
We are still accepting questions for our upcoming teleseminar on procrastination and fear. We have lots of questions we haven’t answered yet, we will continue posting the answers in the upcoming weeks. To send your question just click on the word question it will take you to Audrey’s email. Put in your name and question and we hope yours will be one chosen for the upcoming teleseminar.

Today I’ll begin by answering questions many of you have sent in.
Then in the next month I’ll be giving information on tips
for relieving stress in children
and other parenting tools.
Today I’ll begin with a quick answer to the question
“Why use hypnosis ?
What can self-hypnotic techniques do for you.
Why I use hypnosis: I believe it is vital for quick, lasting change. I use hypnosis and Neuro-Linguistic Programming in all of my programs.
There are many reasons to learn to use hypnosis and self-hypnosis. The first is that Hypnosis opens the doorway to the power of the unconscious mind. The unconscious holds resources needed to change old habits quickly and permanently. Hypnosis also allows you the ability to tap into inner strengths that are stored in the unconscious. It can also be used to get to the underlying root and release old emotional “junk”. When you learn to use hypnosis techniques you can change old negative reactions and limits at the very root of where they started.
In the upcoming weeks I’ll continue to post tips for reducing stress and fear in children. And will be adding a new section on communication secrets that can make it easy to get your children to listen. Note: These tips work great with adults too.
Looking forward to hearing from you, with questions or comments.

The following post is from a note that came from one of my amazing clients. She is the mother of a beautiful 3 year old and had used what she has learned in therapy to help her own child. When she told me about how she dealt with her daughter’s fear I asked her to send in her story so others could benefit from it too.
I believe that what she had to say is so powerful that I’m posting it today. Parents may find her story useful as they help their own children deal with fear of the dark. It can also be individualized to help with other specific fears. Thank you “J” for sending this in.
The following is the note from “J”:
“I used to believe my panic was brought on by the changes in weather. Night time also used to bring with it terrible anxiety. Whenever it was a rainy or cloudy day, my panic was at its best (meaning worst). During thunderstorms, I my anxiety was off the charts. Actually in any weather, other than sunny, I felt “unsafe”.
After working with Audrey, so much of my fear has lifted. I now can say that I truly know I am OK no matter the weather. In actuality the weather had nothing to do with my panic, even though at the time it seemed to control me.
Here is what happened that stimulated me to create a story that would help my daughter deal with her fear of the dark. One evening while driving, my 3yr old daughter said, “Mom, I don’t like the night. It’s scary.” When I heard those words, I began to feel sad that my sweet little daughter was dealing with fear and anxiety. And I could feel a rumbling of the old fear I used to have,. But this time, instead of continuing with all types of fearful thoughts, (like I would have done before changing the way I deal with fear,) I decided to turn it into a positive story where both my daughter and I both felt safe. This story just seemed to bubble up out of my mind and this is what I said to my daughter.
“Honey, night time doesn’t need to be scary, because it is just as beautiful as the day time. At night, we get to see the moon and talk with the stars . . . During the day . . . the Sun likes to come out to play. . .
Sometimes . . . the clouds say to the sun . . . “Ms. Sun, you’ve had your fun . . . now it is our turn to come out and stay. . . The rain is wonderful and it likes to wash away dirt and clean the air. . . Thunder and lightening, give us a drum and light show in the sky. . . No matter what the weather or time of day, you can create a place you like to be. . . And if you are scared, you can talk to g-d. G-d . . . who will always be there to listen. . . and if you ask g-d to send a calming light you can feel safe. . . all you need to do is imagine this light all around you . . . and as it is all around you all you need to do is breath it in and notice how different that feels, knowing all is well.”
My daughter LOVED this story and it helped ME as I told it to her as well!”
Again, thanks for this great note. I welcome everyone’s thoughts and I am happy
to post helpful stories and comments like the one above.
Looking forward to hearing from you too.
