Hypnosis – Change is Possible

Stress Relief Solutions Comments Off

Yesterday we were discussing the difficulty people have in trying to change an negative habit  using the conscious part of the mind.

I received the following question: “So you think a person can’t change using conscious, cognitive thoughts?”

Actually the question sounds more like a belief the person who sent it in holds  (about the way to stop old habits or make changes).

I understand why a person might believe that change needs to be hard work or that if somehow  we try hard enough, change will happen. Perhaps it might be able to be done just by telling ourselves to change,  I haven’t found that to be the case.  And even if it were possible it would take so many repetitions that you would probably stop trying before hitting success.

I’m know many people have experienced the frustration of  trying to change, by telling themselves to do it different, or by repeating a mantra, over and over.

But, rather than talking more about this, let’s just do the following exercise.  Then we’ll discuss more about why I believe that using the “right” part of the mind is vital to making change last.

Well guess we’ll have to wait till tomorrow’s post for the exercise.  I’m part of a challenge to keep my posts shorter, so I’ll see you tomorrow for the exercise.

We are still accepting questions for our upcoming teleseminar on procrastination and fear.  We have lots of questions we haven’t answered yet, and will continue posting the answers in the upcoming weeks.

Using pain to stop negative thoughts. Is there a better way? Part 3

Stress Relief Solutions Comments Off

Hello again I’m Audrey Sussman and this is the 3rd of a  4 part post on using pain to change negative thoughts.  I believe there are better ways of changing habits than the use of pain.

Continued from yesterday’s post discussing the Rubber band snap to change negative thinking Part 2.

Today is Part 3.  The habit that the instructor was trying to help participants break was the habit of negative thinking and limiting beliefs.  Specifically he was talking about the little voice that runs in the back of the mind.  The one that causes fear, procrastination and stress.

So, I agreed with him that when statements or beliefs running in the back of the mind are dis-empowering it is important to change them.  It is also important to create new supportive empowering ones. . .

But the directions he gave for this exercise were alarming.  He told the participants to take the rubberband he gave them, and it was a sturdy, thick one, and pull it “all the way back” . . .   And he demonstrated pulling it all the way and then letting it go.  He even went to so far as to say, I thought he was kidding at the time, that even a little blood would be good.  And, you will probably find this hard to believe,  but the people in the audience did as he said.

Whenever they had a negative thought, or thought I can’t do something, they took those rubberbands, pulled them really far and let it go, snapping it on their wrists.  This continued for the next few hours.  People had big red welts on their  swollen wrists.

Thank goodness this instructor didn’t have tazers to hand out to each person, I can just imagine what would have happened. Yes, I guess it is true that if you cause enough pain it can stop a bad habit, but there are much better ways to do this without trauma to the body.

I was horrified to see the damage people had done to their wrists, in hopes of stopping negative thinking.

Please, it someone in authority, even someone that seems wise and charismatic tells you to do something, if it sounds wrong, please, please pay attention to the wisdom of your own mind.

There is a way that the rubber band snap can be used to “snap” you out of a the negative of negative self talk.  Continued tomorrow with a way to use the rubberband if you choose this method. . .

Sleep problem – Learn to have deep, restful Sleep

Audrey Sussman PhDThis week as I was working on my online course to help people who are suffering with sleep problems, I came across some information that was really distressing.  While doing some research, I came across a popular self-help book about curing sleep problems and it said in essence, if the exercises (they gave) did not work it’s because the reader was not doing them correctly.    Seems to me like that was putting more stress on people who were trying to get help.  So many people who can’t sleep are already blaming themselves, they don’t need something else to feel bad about.

I want to dispute this disturbing information, I felt like calling the author and saying how dare you say that if the person reading the book wasn’t getting relief, it was because they weren’t doing it right. Wow, talk about putting the blame in the wrong place, saying that somehow it was the readers fault, and couldn’t possibly be the fault of the information in the book or some other reason.   That just burned me up.

Although I do agree that sometimes, what an author is writing and what the reader is “hearing” may not match, but blaming the reader is hardly fair.

After over 25 years helping people with insomnia, panic, anxiety and even Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Migraines, I have found most people will do almost anything to  get rid of the problem they are facing.   So I’m going to believe that a person who buys a book to get help with getting a good night sleep is going to do the exercises and will read in an open-minded state.

I hope that this type of blame has not happened in your life.  If you have been beating yourself up, or if you have been feeling like you’ve done your best without results, it may be possible that the problem isn’t that you’re doing things incorrectly.  It might be that either the book isn’t right for you or that there are underlying issues that need to be resolved before the exercises will work for you.

I have seen this happen in my own practice.  I just finished 10 sessions of therapy with a client who came in to see me after suffering with 15 years of sleep problems. He had tried just about everything and still, as soon as his head hit the pillow, no matter how tired he was, it seemed like his eyes would just pop open and he wouldn’t be able to sleep until the wee hours of the morning.  We started with some of the “sleep” exercises that have worked for many of my clients, but in addition we began to look for underlying roots of this problem.  I can assure you I didn’t blame him, we searched for, and the found the underlying issues.  And low-and-behold, after releasing some old stuffed emotions we were able to quickly re-program his sleep habits.  He felt his entire life changed, in just 10 sessions.  Although it was his sleep issues that caused him to seek my help,he also got major benefits from taking care of the issues lying at the root  of the problem.  The benefits of new found confidence extended  out into other areas of his life as well.

Everyone works in their own optimal time frame, what can take one person 10 sessions might take another person only 4, or another 20 sessions.  The number of sessions it takes is determined by not only how deeply rooted the problem is but also by each person nature.  It’s not a competition, when the change happen it can feels like it took place in an instant.   The fact that lasting relief is possible should give you new hope. So if you are still having a problem with sleep, it just might be that are other issues keeping you from succeeding in your quest.

Is Hypnosis Right for You?

Stress Relief Solutions 1 Comment »

Audrey Sussman PhDDr. Audrey talks about Hypnosis.

Excerpt from teleseminar, questions people are asking . . . .

This is the top question I get from new clients, “Can I be hypnotized?”  Many times this question is followed with the statement  “I’m a very logical, scientific kind of person, and I’m strong willed, so  even though I want it use hypnosis, I don’t think it will work for me.”

The truth is that almost everyone can be hypnotized. Of course, the question remains how do you know if hypnosis is right for you?

Actually in over 25 years of practice I have found that the people with either high intelligence or creativity are the best hypnotic “subjects.”  And if you are both intelligent and creative you will delight yourself at how quickly you can make self-hypnosis work for you.   One of the reasons people who come to our seminars find it so easy to use the Transformation System techniques is that we know how to ask the questions that quickly help you to tap into you own powerful unconscious.  And there are many of techniques that can be utilized, that’s what we do, in both our seminars and with private consulations we help you to find just the right technique that will work best for you.    When you come to our telesminar, your job is simply to be curious, have an open mind and want to overcome what ever challenge you are dealing with.  We have the techniques and skills that you can put to use right away in your daily life.

If you are not yet comfortable with the thought of using hypnosis, there are other techniques that can be learned  to change negative thinking and fears.    You can overcome challenges using these other techniques though it might take you a bit more time to get the results.  But it is important to start on the path of learning to use the power of your own mind today, otherwise nothing will change.

So no matter if you are a person who wants to access the resources of your unconscious today, or someone who is more tentative and wants skills without using hypnotic techniques, take the first step and ask us a question so we can evaluate you as an individual and help you to make educated choices. Click here to ask a question of our staff.  At times we get so many similar questions that we do an online seminar where you can have assess to our experts “in person” in an online teleseminar.  So please have courage and send your questions about hypnosis, fear, procrastination anxiety, panic or any other topic related to feeling stuck.

Once again, if you are suffering from Anxiety and Fear.  If you have a weight problem, procrastinate, have panic, a phobia or even if you feel sad, there is help available.  Hypnosis is just one of many ways that you can find the answers to living a fuller and more complete life. If you are suffering, don’t delay one more second.   Send your questions or call for a free consultation at 856-751-9446.

You have nothing to lose and a better life to gain.

The formula for Life Changing Mantras

Negatives mantras “playing in the back of your mind” can cause you to doubt your own talents or abilities, to feel responsible or guilty for things that are not your fault, and even get in the way in relationships.  The feelings produced by mantras can lead to over-eating, anxiety, procrastination, addiction and depression.  Negative mantras can keep you from achieving your goals and take the joy out of the things you love.

At first it may take awhile to become aware of these negative mantras, but with time and practice, they will begin to emerge. Whenever negative thoughts and images move through your mind they have an effect on your mood. No matter how intelligent, creative or successful you may be these messages cause stress and even self-doubt.  As a hypno-therapist, I see the pain that is caused when people beat themselves up with negative self-talk.  Sometimes we are consciously aware of the harmful messages, but many times thoughts move so quickly that we aren’t even aware we just had a thought.  What we are aware of is tension and stress negative thoughts leave behind.

So what can you do if negative mantras are interfering in your life?  The first step is to recognize your negative mantras. Just start by paying attention when uncomfortable feelings surface.  As you become aware of your feelings, “listen” for the dis-empowering thoughts passing through your mind.

Often, when we have a negative feeling, we’re not even aware of that . . .   continued tomorrow.
