Today Jacob Krueger continues to talk about Fear and it’s role in procrastination.

Question (from a participant in the 2010 writing challenge):
I’ve been doing the challenge, but I hate everything I’m writing.  And now I feel like I’m starting to lose steam.

Jake’s Answer:
As writers we play a strange game with ourselves.  Instead of dwelling on our successes, we focus on our failures as evidence that we were not meant to be writers.  Usually this has more to do with fear than anything else.  Fear of failure.   Fear of rejection.  Fear that we don’t have what it takes.

When your judgment of your writing is based on fear, it has little connection to reality.  You may dismiss brilliant writing as terrible simply because you are afraid that others won’t like it.  Or you may fall in love with scenes that are not working, simply because they feel safe to you.

There are many ways to overcome these kinds of fears.  Many writers find that it helps to get honest feedback on their work from writers they respect.  That is one of the benefits of  being part of Jake’s Workshops or Master Classes.  This is a community where you can receive honest feedback about what is actually working or not working in your writing, rather than playing out your worst fears in your head.

Jake continues to explain that writers block isn’t just about the actual writing.  It’s about the subconscious, underlying emotions that get in the way of writing.  For deep rooted emotional blocks, many students set up private coaching sessions.  In these sessions, Jake teaches them to use cutting-edge hypnotic techniques to get under the surface, uncover the subconscious roots of creative blocks, and eliminate them at the source.

Stop Procrasatination- Jake’s action step 2

Action step 1: For stopping procrastination was written for writers feeling blocked.  This Journal  is a tool you will come to love.  Anyone who wants to unlock “unconscious” blockages will find they benefit from Action Step 2 that Jake will reveal today.  It is so simple, yet the power comes from taking the action in step 2.   So read on and email us with your thoughts after one week of doing this simple act.  I have used it in my own life, and countless clients of mine have found it has opened up the “conversation” between the two parts of the mind. (for information on the two parts of the mind refer to that post.

Action Step 1: Go out and buy yourself a nice journal. (full directions in his newsletter)

Step 2:  Set your clock to wake you up 15 minutes early.  Or as soon as you open your eyes, grab your journal and start writing.  Have it right next to your bed, with a pen, so there are no excuses.  Just write 3 pages.  Let your thoughts flow from one thing to another. You can even complain about this exercise for three pages, just write something.

(The full instructions are in Jake’s newsletter). Audrey is  breaking it down into smaller pieces for you.   Just do it the writing every day for the next 2 weeks.  People have found that amazing changes happen when using action step 2.  Writing 3 pages of streaming thoughts every day.

When you procrastinate and tell yourself, “I’ll do it later or tomorrow”  what happens?  Most people find they come up with more excuses.  This is using your very creative mind in a negative way. So,  take action steps 1 and 2, we’ll talk more tomorrow about breaking the procrastination habit.

A Tip for going into trance easily – Know your lead system(3a)

Remember that each of us processes information in a different way. The 3 types of processing are visual, auditory and kinesthetic.   To find out your “lead system” do this simple exercise.  Imagine an apple.  Do this before reading the rest of the instructions. Now that you’ve thought of an apple.  Here is how you know what your lead or preferred system of processing is.

If you are “talking to yourself” about what type of apple you are supposed to be thinking about, you just might be an auditory, because you are hearing yourself speak about the apple in your head.  An auditory person might be thinking about the crunching sound as a bite is taken.

If you see a red or green apple in your mind’s eye, or if you can say if it is a large or small apple, then you are probably a visual.  Because you are seeing it “in your mind’s eye”.

For a person who is kinesthetic you might tell me that it’s a cold apple, or that its a large heavy own.   If you can imagine feeling the coolness before you even see it i”n your mind’s eye”, chances are you might process information in a kinesthetic. (feeling) way.

For a hypnotherapist knowing the lead system is important in helping a client easily to go into trance.  You would want to use words that follow the preferred system.  As a hypnotherapist we help people to learn to purposefully use all three Visual, Auditory and Kinesthetic.  When you include all three in your work  you get a very powerful way of creating change.  Also if you know about these three type of ways of processing you can use it to create rapport in an instant.  But that is a whole other seminar.

Hypnosis – will I lose control? (2a)

Hypnosis Fact and Myth: Excerpts from a seminar given by Audrey Sussman PhD for new practitioners of hypnosis.

This morning we were discussing a common fear people have about hypnosis and going into trance.  Many people are afraid they will do something embarrassing.  I was telling the story about a woman I was talking to a lunch one day who had been in a stage hypnosis show.  She had a first commented that she felt compelled to follow suggestions.  So I asked her the question about what would have happened if the hypnotist had asked her to do something outrageous.   What I actually said was, “if he asked you to run around naked, would you have done that?”  As I suspected the woman replied, that she would never do that, as a matter of fact, she then remembered that she didn’t do a number of “stupid” things the stage hypnotist asked her to do.

This little story is a fun way to point out that under hypnosis, a person won’t do anything that is against their value system.  If on the other hand this woman valued running around naked, she might do what the hypnotist said and then later say but he made me do it.  In reality we won’t do what doesn’t fit with who we are.  I just use this little story to dispel the popular notion that a hypnotist can take control of someone. .  .

Hypnosis Facts and Misconceptions 2A

even thought it is written for the clinician.

Clients may at first believe that the hypnotist produces their responses. In reality the client only acts on suggestions that are in alignment with their values. They are fully capable of making decisions at all times.  Hypnosis is not about taking control but about helping the client to gain more control over their reactions.  The trance state also will help them to get in touch with untapped resources they have within.

Often people fear that they will reveal some “secret” while under hypnosis.  Just as in the waking state people know what they are saying, in hypnosis they are also aware of everything they are saying.  They will only talk about what they choose to reveal. Sometimes this problem surfaces with people who have suffered abuse and fear their family members will be judged.  I deal with this fear by explaining that memories are “made up” anyway. We remember things according to the “filters” we have at the time of the event.  So even if a negative memory comes up it doesn’t mean it is necessarily exactly what happened.  For therapeutic purposes we act “as if” it is true since that is the way they have it stored in their memory.  True or not it needs to be dealt with.

Another fear some clients have is that they might not come out of trance. This can cause reservations to being hypnotized so first I explain that I have never had this happen to any of my clients.  Second that they are in complete control and can come out of “trance” at anytime. Third, if they are doing self-hypnosis at home and they were to fall asleep, they would eventually wake up naturally.  By explaining that trance state is not sleep it prepares the person letting them know that they are not expected to sleep.  Self hypnosis can be used as a method to help a person fall asleep but that is not what we are looking to do during therapy.
