Why habits don’t change.

Home Study Course, Stress Relief Solutions, articles by Audrey No Comments »

Today we continue to discuss the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind.   By understanding which part of the mind holds the unwanted “program” it makes it possible to change the programing. When there are things we don’t like in ourselves the unconscious part of the mind is usually where the root lies.

Sometimes it is easier to understand the difference between the conscious and unconscious by comparing  the two parts to the different parts of the computer.  The conscious mind can be compared to the screen on a computer, while the unconscious mind would be more similar to the hard drive, including all the programs running there.

As most of us know the hard drive has so much more information than what shows up on the computer screen.  When there is a glitch in the computer programming, no matter how many times we try to fix it on the computer screen, the glitch will continue until we fix  the faulty program.    To fix “faulty” programming in a human we go to the part of the mind where the programming is located, the unconscious.   By releasing or reprogramming old limiting beliefs, habits and repressed emotional issues at the root, true and lasting change can take place.

Because the unconscious is like the hard drive, with so much information, and of course the programs “set in” during childhood.  This is the part we go to in order to make lasting change.  To gain entrance to the unconscious we use hypnosis and trance.  The trance state makes it possible to release old emotions and reprogram new  habits, beliefs and move past what causes us to get stuck in life.

So, if you find yourself falling back into old patterns, cut yourself some slack.  It’s not because you haven’t tried to change, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t motivated it might be that you’re just using the wrong part of the mind.

So start by pulling out the the self blame and the resulting  frustration it causes.   Know that change is possible when you learn to  use the “right” part of the mind.  Falling back into old habits is typically  because the old program is still running, no matter your good intentions.  This can be changed, once you understand which part of the mind to use.   I have found this to be the case no matter how difficult the issue seems. For more information on this  and other “feeling stuck” issues look for our upcoming posts in the New Year.

Halt Panic, Irrational Fears, Procrastination

Exercises and Tips, Stress Relief Solutions, articles by Audrey No Comments »

This is the 3rd part of the answer to the question about changing stress using the”conscious” part of the mind.

Question: “Is there anyway I can reduce stress without doing self-hypnosis or trance?”

Answer part 3

The answer to your question is yes there are many ways to deal with or manage stress on the conscious level.  There are many books on the subject including some I’ve authored myself.

I believe it is important to know how to stop stress on using all the parts of the mind, conscious and unconscious.

Even positive events can cause a stress reaction.  Most of my research and work is on showing people how to change the internal triggers. The reason I teach people to go to the unconscious is that this is where most habits and reactions, including the reaction of stress comes from. And the unconscious is the place where old “junk” can be released and deep permanent change happens.

Yet, there are many times I teach “conscious” or cognitive exercises for stress relief. If you are on the anxietycontrolcenter site you can find some more information on some of my favorite exercises using the conscious part of the mind on the right side of the screen under the topic Halt panic, irrational fears and Phobias.  Tomorrow I’ll post an exercise to get you started.

Stress Reduction tips

Home Study Course, Stress Relief Solutions, articles by Audrey No Comments »

I have been getting a number of questions and I thank all of you who have sent them in.  In the next few posts I’ll give some tips or exercises as I answer the questions I’ve received.  Please keep the questions coming, see the end of this post for directions:

Question:  “It seems that you believe you only can reduce stress by going to the unconscious part of the mind. Is there anyway I can reduce stress without doing self-hypnosis or trance?

Answer Part 1: Yes,  I do believe that using a trance state to reprogram unconscious patterns is the most effective and lasting way to change unwanted habits and limits.  Yet, you are correct that is important to use all the parts of the mind.  Many times I incorporate cognitive and behavioral skills usually used on the conscious level into hypnotic exercises.

To answer your question yes there are many exercises I teach that help to bring down stress. These can be done without going into a trance state.  Let’s start by talking about the stress reaction itself and then tomorrow I’ll post an exercise you can practice.

1. Stress reactions do not come out of the blue, even when it feels like they do. For many people it is the feeling of being out of control that increases the stress.

2. So the first step is to remind yourself, that whenever you feel stressed,  there is a trigger.  It might be so tiny it just flits through your mind, but it is there.

3. As you begin to take a moment to recognize that the stress reaction is always in response to a stimulus, you might find can be helpful to change your reaction from “why is this happening” to the question “what is this about.

4. By changing the question from “why” to “what” makes a big difference.  The why question usually leads to self blame.  The “what is this about” question leads to curiosity.  Being curious put you back into a healthy state of mind for new learnings.

If you look at the right side of this screen you’ll see a page called worry busters, these are also skills that can be used in the “conscious” state of mind, no trance necessary.

Using Pain to Stop Negative Thoughts? Is there a better way? Part 1

Exercises and Tips, Stress Relief Solutions, articles by Audrey No Comments »

I hope you enjoyed Tish’s posts the last three days.  She’ll be back with more soon.  I’m Audrey Sussman and today I’ll start with the 1st in a  4 part post.  I’ll be talking about the use of pain to break negative habits.

I actually do NOT use or recommend the use of pain.  In over 25 years of practice I have found there are much healthier ways to change negative habits.  But since there are people “out there” that are recommending using the pain/pleasure principle to change habits,  I felt it was important to talk about how to use it safely, if you do decide to use this type of technique.

What stimulated my thinking about this was . . .  to be continued tomorrow.

Hypnosis –How to go into Trance in Just Seconds.

Exercises and Tips, Hypnosis and Trance, Stress Relief Solutions, articles by Audrey No Comments »

Do you find yourself without enough time to relax and recharge?    This simple self-hypnotic exercise will help you to develop a trance state, where your can re-charge and relax in just moments.   Trance can be learned quite easily.  If you are willing to practice just a few minutes a day you will find going into trance in just moments, is an easy thing to do. Today I’ll talk about an easy way to use your mind to create a state of trance.

Here is an easy to follow exercise on how you can do this in a short amount of time.  You can use this exercise whenever you have a few moments.  Waiting in line at the supermarket, on the bus, anywhere you have a moment to practice.  This can even be done with your eyes open.   Anywhere, anytime you have a few moments, take out this exercise.

Simply imagine a light all around you.  Whenever you have a few moments of time, just imagine  that you are breathing in this beautiful light.  As you imagine the light surrounding you, you are doing what you do naturally, just breathing.  But this time you are creating a trance state, using your breath.   With each breath you take in the light,  letting it totally fill your body and mind.

Don’t try to do this perfectly.  This is a practice and with each practice your level of trance will become deeper and easier.    When you look back at your day you’ll surprise yourself with how many practices you have.

Whenever you have a few moments of time, just imagine breathing in a beautiful light.  When I do this exercise I change the color of light to see which one feels the best to me at the time.  Whatever color you choose is fine.  In time, without any other effort, just practicing you’ll find this trance state  will help you to re-charge or relax.  Some other places you might practice are waiting in the doctor’s office, sitting in your office chair, anyplace you have a moment.

Get started today and before you know it you will be creating a state of trance.

If you want to make this even more powerful, keep a notebook with you during the day and make notes of how you would like to feel in certain situations. This can be used to enhance this exercise.  Imagine the light around you bringing the feelings you desire.

Fear & Anxiety Gone 2nd post

Exercises and Tips, Stress Relief Solutions, about the Anxiety Control Center, articles by Audrey No Comments »

The Transformation System™ was originally created to relieve panic and phobia and over time we have found that it also works in re-programming other distressing emotions such as depression, sadness, grief, self-doubt, fear and anger.  Over time we have added new techniques to this system so people can get relief from Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Migraines.  The results people get sometimes seems to be instantaneous.

When people first learn that hypnotic techniques are part of the system they have a number of different reactions, ranging from excitement about trying something new, to skepticism and even fear.

In talking to many people I have found that much of the fear about hypnosis comes from misconceptions gotten from movies and stage hypnosis shows.  In both movies and shows the hypnotist seems to have some sort of magical power and can control the hypnotic “subjects.”   An old movie many people bring up, had a  man named Svengali who was able to use hypnosis to get women to do his bidding.  This movie caused many people to believe and fear that posthypnotic suggestions would make them do something they wouldn’t want to do.

This is not how hypnosis really works.  In reality, therapeutic hypnosis is not about taking control but giving back power and choice to the individual.  Although posthypnotic suggestions do trigger a response after the trance state, a person will only act on the suggestions if it fits with who they are.

Hypnotic suggestions not acceptable to a person’s unconscious will eventually be undone even if they were to be accepted at first.  Of course, with hypnosis it is most important to feel comfortable with the person doing the hypnotic work.

I’ve put together a few things to consider when choosing your hypnotherapist.  Of course we hope you will choose one of our therapists at the Anxiety Control Center, but no matter who you choose we hope the following tips are of help.

One of the most important things once you choose your hypnotherapist is to make sure that you and your therapist are clear about the goals you want to achieve.  Goals need to be set, before any work is done.

The following are some questions you might want to ask when deciding on a hypnotherapist
1. Ask where they received their training
2. Make sure they are at least board certified
3. It is a good sign if they have at least a master’s in a health related field,
4. If they don’t have at least a master’s degree ask if they are supervised by someone who does.
5. Once you have decided on a hypno-therapist you can ask to experience a MINI-trance. A mini-trance is, a brief trance session, you can be fully awake and aware during this; you can even have your eyes open.   It is a great way to get comfortable with hypnosis.
6.  Why I recommend using hypnosis.
a.  Using a light trance state opens your mind to information not available in the ordinary conscious state.
b.  A hypnotic or trance state also lets you tap into the healing power of your own unconscious mind.
c.  In the trance state you can release old emotions and re-program new more beneficial patterns of behavior.

So, if fear ever stops you from doing something, if you have self-doubt, are suffering with panic or anxiety you will find that hypnosis is a quick, lasting way to get rid of these limits.   For 2 easy to learn hypnotic techniques
