Getting relief from depression
Review:
A.Whenever you feel sad, grief stricken, overwhelmed, fearful or anxious.
Start by taking some type of action.
You want to change the “state of mind.” This can be done in many different ways.
It is difficult to think of something to do to change your state of mind in the middle of a panic attack, or when you are in the grip of depression. One of my clients asked for techniques she could refer to anytime she was feeling out of control with emotion.
The following is what we came up with. It is a list of possible things she can choose from. Having a list helps, so that in the moment of emotion she doesn’t have to think, she can just choose to take action on any one thing from her list.
You might find something on her list helpful, start to add some of you own unique solutions. This client already know many of the exercises from the Anxiety Control Center’s, Transformation System, so they are not described in detail here. They are easy to learn and use.
The following is her list of action steps when emotions are raging:
1. Walk outside, even if it is cold out.
2. Read a book or magazine
3. Sing or play guitar
4. Use one of the NLP techniques to “shrink the image down to size”
5. Imagine being in a warm tub.
6. Hug her dog.
7. Use the “rubber-band snap” technique.
8. Use tapping exercise.
9. Go to the video guide to help to change the “state of mind,
10. Using the “color” breathing exercise
11. Use the “fact & stories” exercise.
12. Create 2 positives for every negative. (2 for 1 exercise)
13. Listen to the “Healing Walk” exercise I gave her.
14. Pay attention and focus inward, using the curiosity technique.
This last technique will help you to collect information that you might not be aware of on a conscious level. Being curious is a vital step to using your mind in a different way.
Changing from self blame to self acceptance:
In getting relief from depression and other emotions that get in the way of living a full life, it is important to learn how to be kinder to yourself, as you are, even before the emotions totally lift. Recovering from depression is a process, keep taking one small step and it will motivate you to the next step, until one day you will surprise yourself at what you have accomplished.
If you have you been suffering from depression, panic, anxiety or feeling hopeless, change is possible ! I have watched so many people use my Transformation System to get out from under the dark spell of depression.

Continuing with information about hypnosis and letting go of anxiety and fear:
We were talking yesterday about hypnosis and fears of being out of control. There are 2 types of hypnosis.
1. Ericksonian (various techniques including: regression, parts work, anchoring, phobia cure etc.)
2. Classical (most commonly used for relaxation and suggestion).
In actuality no matter what type of hypnosis is used you can’t be forced to do anything you don’t want to do. Because your body will not accept suggestions that are not right for you. Even in a deep trance state you remain in control of your actions.
Because most of our clients have some type of anxiety or panic, I have found that it is vitally important for success for my clients to feel aware and in control.
A client of mine who used our Transformation System to get rid of her migraines, sent me a cartoon that I feel demonstrates how the hypnosis we use at the Anxiety Control Center feels.
In this cartoon there is a man, with his feet stuck to the ceiling, head hovering above the floor. The caption reads: “I still don’t think I am hypnotized.” This cartoon illustrates an important point about hypnosis: you can make immense changes in your life without feeling hypnotized. The trance state helps you to access deep within where it is possible to make positive changes with apparent ease.
What makes hypnosis such a powerful tool is that by going directly to the subconscious mind. . .
to be continued tomorrow.

Have you been suffering from depression and feeling hopeless? Have you tried
but don’t know how to change these feelings?
Are you wishing for something, some “guiding light,” some technique, anything
that’s will help you to get out from under the dark spell of depression? I want you
to know that here is hope ! I have a step-by-step plan of actions for you to take.
They are it easy to follow, because I know that when you are depressed it’s difficult
to concentrate or to have energy to even read a short article.
I realize that when you are depressed and your energy is depleted it might be hard
to even get out of bed, not to mention reading an article on how to get relief. So to
make this even easier, I give you a link to a video that will guide you through the
first action step.
So, please, read on and take action, by going to watch the video today. Take the
first step in changing your life today. The link is at the bottom of this article.
My name is Audrey Sussman and for over the past 25 years I have helped my
clients to find a way to move themselves from feeling depressed and hopeless,
to feeling optimism and energy.
The first step is simple. It is something so easy to do that you can even do it from
the bed or the chair you are sitting in. So I’ll keep this to just the first step.
In the days and weeks to come, I’ll give you the next steps. If you follow the
step-by-step plan, you might even surprise yourself as you begin to look forward
to doing the next small step. Keeping it simple, taking tiny steps moves you in
the direction of hope, until one day you notice you are thinking and feeling
differently.
So, for you who are suffering with depression, worry, or loss of hope, lets start
with the first easy step, and it’s something that only requires your doing something
you are doing anyway. This is it: Changing your breathing pattern. This is a
physical or behavioral technique to change your state of mind. There are other
techniques to deal with negative thoughts and emotions, but we need to start with
the 1st step first.
Go to actionendsprocrastination.com and watch the video. I’ll guide your through
and give you tips for making it even more successful. Practice it every day for the
next two weeks, and stay curious.
If you would rather have the written directions, put in your name and email
in the box on the right of this post to download the directions.
That’s it for today. Start with the first behavioral change, and you’ll be preparing
yourself for the next step, I’ll be giving you. See you soon,
Audrey

Today we continue to discuss the conscious and unconscious parts of the mind. By understanding which part of the mind holds the unwanted “program” it makes it possible to change the programing. When there are things we don’t like in ourselves the unconscious part of the mind is usually where the root lies.
Sometimes it is easier to understand the difference between the conscious and unconscious by comparing the two parts to the different parts of the computer. The conscious mind can be compared to the screen on a computer, while the unconscious mind would be more similar to the hard drive, including all the programs running there.
As most of us know the hard drive has so much more information than what shows up on the computer screen. When there is a glitch in the computer programming, no matter how many times we try to fix it on the computer screen, the glitch will continue until we fix the faulty program. To fix “faulty” programming in a human we go to the part of the mind where the programming is located, the unconscious. By releasing or reprogramming old limiting beliefs, habits and repressed emotional issues at the root, true and lasting change can take place.
Because the unconscious is like the hard drive, with so much information, and of course the programs “set in” during childhood. This is the part we go to in order to make lasting change. To gain entrance to the unconscious we use hypnosis and trance. The trance state makes it possible to release old emotions and reprogram new habits, beliefs and move past what causes us to get stuck in life.
So, if you find yourself falling back into old patterns, cut yourself some slack. It’s not because you haven’t tried to change, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t motivated it might be that you’re just using the wrong part of the mind.
So start by pulling out the the self blame and the resulting frustration it causes. Know that change is possible when you learn to use the “right” part of the mind. Falling back into old habits is typically because the old program is still running, no matter your good intentions. This can be changed, once you understand which part of the mind to use. I have found this to be the case no matter how difficult the issue seems. For more information on this and other “feeling stuck” issues look for our upcoming posts in the New Year.

This is the 3rd part of the answer to the question about changing stress using the”conscious” part of the mind.
Question: “Is there anyway I can reduce stress without doing self-hypnosis or trance?”
Answer part 3
The answer to your question is yes there are many ways to deal with or manage stress on the conscious level. There are many books on the subject including some I’ve authored myself.
I believe it is important to know how to stop stress on using all the parts of the mind, conscious and unconscious.
Even positive events can cause a stress reaction. Most of my research and work is on showing people how to change the internal triggers. The reason I teach people to go to the unconscious is that this is where most habits and reactions, including the reaction of stress comes from. And the unconscious is the place where old “junk” can be released and deep permanent change happens.
Yet, there are many times I teach “conscious” or cognitive exercises for stress relief. If you are on the anxietycontrolcenter site you can find some more information on some of my favorite exercises using the conscious part of the mind on the right side of the screen under the topic Halt panic, irrational fears and Phobias. Tomorrow I’ll post an exercise to get you started.

I have been getting a number of questions and I thank all of you who have sent them in. In the next few posts I’ll give some tips or exercises as I answer the questions I’ve received. Please keep the questions coming, see the end of this post for directions:
Question: “It seems that you believe you only can reduce stress by going to the unconscious part of the mind. Is there anyway I can reduce stress without doing self-hypnosis or trance?
Answer Part 1: Yes, I do believe that using a trance state to reprogram unconscious patterns is the most effective and lasting way to change unwanted habits and limits. Yet, you are correct that is important to use all the parts of the mind. Many times I incorporate cognitive and behavioral skills usually used on the conscious level into hypnotic exercises.
To answer your question yes there are many exercises I teach that help to bring down stress. These can be done without going into a trance state. Let’s start by talking about the stress reaction itself and then tomorrow I’ll post an exercise you can practice.
1. Stress reactions do not come out of the blue, even when it feels like they do. For many people it is the feeling of being out of control that increases the stress.
2. So the first step is to remind yourself, that whenever you feel stressed, there is a trigger. It might be so tiny it just flits through your mind, but it is there.
3. As you begin to take a moment to recognize that the stress reaction is always in response to a stimulus, you might find can be helpful to change your reaction from “why is this happening” to the question “what is this about.
4. By changing the question from “why” to “what” makes a big difference. The why question usually leads to self blame. The “what is this about” question leads to curiosity. Being curious put you back into a healthy state of mind for new learnings.
If you look at the right side of this screen you’ll see a page called worry busters, these are also skills that can be used in the “conscious” state of mind, no trance necessary.
